Ultramarathon Man and Best-Selling Author Dean Karnazes Challenges Americans to Achieve Their Personal Best While Tackling 50 Certified Marathons in 50 States over 50 Days
SAN LEANDRO, California –August 15, 2006— The North Face, the world’s premier supplier of authentic, innovative and technically advanced outdoor apparel, equipment and footwear, today officially announced The North Face Endurance 50, in which athlete and world’s most recognized ultra-marathoner, Dean Karnazes, will attempt to run 50 certified marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days.
The North Face Endurance 50 is a celebration of endurance and the athletes who push preconceived notions of what is possible—Dean’s goal is to invite Americans to achieve their own personal best, whether completing their first marathon or logging their 20th. Dean, who is being coached by Carmichael Training Systems, President, Founder and CEO, Chris Carmichael, will commence the first marathon on September 17 at The Lewis and Clark Marathon in St. Charles, MO.
“The North Face was founded upon exploration and is committed to endurance,” said Joe Flannery, Vice President of Marketing, The North Face. “The North Face Endurance 50 epic event encourages everyone to push and test their own personal limits by asking people to join Dean in one or more marathons and to promote healthy active living.”
Labeled “the fittest man in the world” by Men’s Fitness, Dean’s past feats include running 350 continuous miles, mountain biking for 25 hours straight, swimming across the San Francisco Bay, and running a marathon to the South Pole.
By the end of The North Face Endurance 50, Dean will have run 1,310 miles and burned over 150,000 calories. In the process, he will also be supporting running clubs and runners across the nation and raising funds for KARNO KIDS, the non-profit organization he founded to support, encourage and motivate youth to get outside and become more physically active. He hopes to make marathon running, the ultimate individual sport, a symbol of what people can achieve if they aspire to explore their personal limits.
In addition to the thousands of people who will support him, Dean will utilize the most cutting-edge outdoor sports products for The North Face Endurance 50 expedition. Dean will be running in The North Face Arnuva 50 Boa with the unique Boa Lacing System to take advantage of the “quick, on-the-fly, micro adjustments.” The endurance-specific shoe also includes toe-cap air channels, a breathable tongue matrix construction, rear foot compression cage delivering greater midsole longevity, and TNF Tenacious Grip™ rubber, providing superb traction on-and off-road in a variety of conditions. Dean, who worked closely with the design team to create the Arnuva, found that his inspiration mirrors the principles of The North Face’s Endurance collection—testing the limits of the human body, while inspiring the desire to explore.
Timex will provide exclusive timing, GPS and heart rate monitoring for Dean, tracking his every heartbeat and every mile. Dean and his trainer will rely on the accuracy and durability of the Timex® Ironman Triathlon® Bodylink® to ensure that he is running at peak performance as he withstands this ultimate test of endurance.
Dean will also rely on SOLE Footbeds during The North Face Endurance 50. SOLE Footbeds are heat-moldable inserts that deliver a custom fit for each unique foot, without losing their supportive shape.
To ensure he ingests enough nutrients, Dean will be drinking Cytomax through the duration of The North Face Endurance 50. Cytomax, an optimum sports performance drink containing essential complex carbohydrates, delivers a gradual energy boost throughout each marathon—not one, short, intense peak followed by the inevitable “crash.” Cytomax also provides all-important antioxidants to prevent exercise-induced free radical damage to muscle cells.
Nature’s Path Organic Food—including energy bars, breads, and cereals—will also help sustain Dean throughout The North Face Endurance 50. Nature’s Path products contain no preservatives or additives, and are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. The company produces products that are not just good for people, but are grown in a way that leads to a healthy planet as well. Says Dean, “Nature’s Path helps me fuel my passion, while also helping me to feel good about the foods I eat.”
In addition, to support Dean’s commitment to a clean environment, The North Face in partnership with The Conservation Fund’s Go Zero program, will be planting trees to zero out emissions created by the event.
At the finish line of each day’s marathon, the sponsors will offer a celebration of endurance and healthy lifestyle. Timex, Nature’s Path Organic Food, Sole Footbeds, Carmichael Training Systems, Boa Lacing Systems and Cytomax will provide samples of their top endurance products being used to support Dean. Each finish line will be an opportunity to meet Dean and experience The North Face endurance-inspired collection and the other top products used in training and fueling Dean for his expedition.
