Serving Southeastern NC and the Cape Fear Region, Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, Salt Marsh Kayak Company offers Kayak Instruction, Rentals and Guided Tours. Salt Marsh is a superb resource for both individuals and groups who share a keen interest in exploring our coastal waters. Salt Marsh specializes in catering to folks with varying levels of experience and interest in Paddlesports.
Salt Marsh Kayak Co. also offers Kayak Tours and Guided Trips that include knowledgeable, safe, friendly and extremely competent guides. All guides have First Aid and CPR certification at the minimum. Salt Marsh staff also includes an EMT and folks with Wilderness First Aid training. Salt Marsh also has two marine biologists on staff that can further enhance your coastal paddling experience.

Salt Marsh Kayak - 2007 Tours
Marshlands Paddle: Escape into a marshland environment rich with birds, crabs, fish and other marine life. The wind and current will determine the route you and your guide take, but featured destinations include a tremendous sand dune with a spectacular view of the marsh, a large osprey nest, and sailboat shipwrecked by Hurricane Fran.

Eco Tour: Embark on a quest to understand the many micro habitats existing in the salt marsh and how they work together to support a very species diverse marine ecosystem. On this kayak tour you will paddle to a variety of interactive stations where you will stop, stretch your legs, and use all your senses to explore the local flora and fauna. These trips are led by kayak guides trained in environmental education practices, and the stations you visit will vary based on tide levels. Some of the topics covered at our stations include crabbing, seining, salt marsh zonation, shell fish, nursery habitat, and benthic organisms.

Local Blackwater Tours: Join Robert Smith, Salt Marsh Kayak Company's blackwater expert, for a custom trip down a local, slow-moving blackwater creek. Spring is the perfect time to explore this unique inland environment which is home to cypress groves, a variety of birds, long-nosed gar, alligator and black bear. Potential destinations include The Black River (which contains a 1200 year old cypress grove), Shelter Creek (home to a variety of tropical song birds), Town Creek, and the Northeast Cape Fear River.
2-hr & 4-hr tours available; reservations required; 4-6 person minimums * Trips are scheduled b/w 9am-3pm; 4-hr $85 per; 2-hr $65 per
Bird Watching Tour: You never know what you might see in the marshlands behind Wrightsville Beach! Blue, green, & tri-colored herons, white & snowy egrets, pelicans, osprey and a variety of gulls abound in this unique environment. In season, ibis, skimmers, oyster catchers, terns, cormorants and loons can be viewed as well. Come explore the wonders of this bird rich environment with an experienced guide.

Sunrise/Sunset Tour: Wrightsville Beach is strikingly tranquil, yet vibrantly alive with the sights and sounds of nature at the beginning and end of the day. Join us for a guided trip at sunrise or sunset and experience just how incredible our little beach can be.
2 hrs, easy; 24-hour notice and reservations required; in season only (April-October)
Group: $50 per person; Private: $70
Masonboro Island Excursion: Less than a mile from our rental facility lies Masonboro Island - an uninhabited, pristine retreat from the hustle and bustle of Wrightsville Beach. Enjoy a vigorous paddle to this barrier beach (or a pleasant ride by water taxi), and then explore the flora and fauna of this unique environment by kayak & on a walking tour.
3-4 hrs, easy to moderate; available by appointment only
Group: $70 per person; Private: $90
Hidden Creek: Enjoy a paddle through a winding marshlands creek accessible only at mid to high tide. This tour is for adventurous types who don't mind a tight squeeze, as the creek narrows to mere two feet in one section. A great trip for kayakers with moderate skills or those who have already conquered our basic marshlands paddle.

Frog Hollow Outdoors - 2007 Trips
Frog Hollow is a Durham based "mom and pop" business that provides residents and visitors of the Triangle Region and North Carolina a resource for the exploration of nature, relaxation, adventure, self discovery, paddling & climbing education, and a greater overall connection to the outdoors.

MAY 12 - Deep River past Endor Iron Furnace
Benefit for Triangle Land Conservancy
This trip will lead us past the historic Endor Iron Furnace (see photo above). There will be a short hike to visit the furnace on this Frog Hollow favorite!
You can also make the Deep River trip petrol free! The Gaia BioBus will be running shuttle for the trip, as well as offering delivery to and from the Deep River through stops in Durham and in Chapel Hill!
MAY 13 - Mother's Day Paddle
All levels of paddling experience welcome
Join us on Sunday afternoon to paddle from West Point on the Eno to Penny's Bend Nature Preserve. If water levels are too low to paddle this section we will paddle from Penny's Bend Nature Preserve to the Eno Boat Ramp. Click here to learn more about these sections of the Eno River.

LITTLE PEE DEE RIVER OVERNIGHT TRIPS
Frog Hollow has set up a new guided trip getaway for private groups on the Little Pee Dee River! The Little Pee Dee is a beautiful black water river in SC, only 3 hours from the Triangle Region of NC. The trip includes use of a quaint, rustic cabin right on the water. Advance notice is needed to reserve a date for this trip.

Enjoy the challenge of Class I, II , and possibly III Piedmont White Water! Locations for these trips alternate between the Haw, Cape Fear and Neuse Rivers. Including shuttle time, etc, these trips will often last up to 5 hours or more.

Prerequisites for Haw & Cape Fear - Participants should be comfortable and have previous moving water river experience in a canoe or kayak . Please contact us if you have any questions about your ability to enjoy and participate in these trips.
Moonlight & Starlight Night Paddles

On the Friday closest to the full moon or the new moon join us for a nighttime paddle. Discover what the evening hours have to offer! Leave your worries behind as we set out in canoes to enjoy the wildlife, soak in the moonrays & starshine, and experience the sounds of nature. These very leisurely paddles are suitable for just about anyone. These take place on Falls Lake, while our "Paddle Under the Stars" Trips (see below) take place on Jordan Lake.

Alligator NWR Day Paddle

Paddle the beautiful Milltail Creek, Boat Bay and Saywer Lake in the Alligator National Wildlife Refuge. Folks attending this day trip may also consider joining us for the short paddle for the overnight trip to the Hidden Lake Platform in the Palmetto Peartree Preserve.

Pre Season Overnight Platform Camping Trips:
All of the Pre-Season Trips listed below are stripped down versions of our regular season guided trips. Some previous paddling experience is required to join any of these trips. Please call for more info. CHOWAN RIVER - HOLLADAY ISLAND PLATFROM TRIP February 24-25
We will begin the trip on the narrow, twisting, black water of Catherine Creek. Over the length of Catherine Creek the river will gradually widen until reaching the broad expanse of the Chowan River. Once at the Chowan a mile long open water crossing will allow us to reach Holladay Island. We will be staying on the very roomy group platform cluster at the southern end of the island. PALMETTO PEARTREE PRESERVE - HIDDEN LAKE PLATFORM TRIP March 10-11
10,000 acres of protected wetland, red-cockaded woodpecker habitat, the Albemarle Sound, and camping on a platform in a hidden lake...what could be better? The short paddle to this destination allows for plenty of personal exploration or relaxation. Folks may also consider joining us for a paddle the day prior in the Alligator National Wildlife Refuge in the Milltail Creek Area. Please call for more details.

Regular Season Overnight Trips:
These trips include everything you need for the trip except personal gear, sleeping bags and pads. Frog Hollow provides guides, basic instruction all trip planning, most meals and overnight accommodations.
